IMG_0906Just about everywhere seems to offer a decaf coffee option these days.  So I was a little surprised in the Organic Food House last week when I was told they didn’t have any.

“But we do have some lovely smoothies, or there’s chai…?” suggested the lady behind the counter with a helpful smile.  I’ll be honest, I’ve never tried a chai latte in my life.  Not because I don’t like the idea of it, but just because…well I’m in a rut with my hot drinks I guess.

Anyway I opted for a chai latte and a slice of banana bread.  My friend ordered a smoothie and slice of the chocolate mousse tart.  The chai and banana bread set me back $10.

It was mid-morning on Friday, the autumn sun was shining and there were plenty of tables in both sun and shade.  Despite the fact it’s tucked away behind the old Countdown, the area feels like a lovely,  little peaceful oasis. We plumped for a table in half sun/half shade.  So far so good.IMG_0904

Then my chai latte arrived.  Presented in a glass mug it was pale and creamy with a slightly, frothy top and a liberal sprinkling of cinnamon on top.  It was one of the most delicious things I’ve tasted in a long time.  I can’t believe I’ve never tried it before.  Not sure how fattening it is though, it was so yummy it tasted like it should have about a gazillion calories in it.

The banana bread was also a hit.  Moist and flavoursome.  Whilst my friend’s mousse tart was bitter, rich delicious.

And the ladies serving were really nice and helpful as well.  Was there too much cinnamon on my chai one of them asked.  They were trying out a new shaker and a bit more than expected had come out.  They could make me a new one if I liked.  Now that’s nice attention to detail.

So, good service, nice area to sit and yummy things to eat and drink.  That ticks all my boxes when it comes to cafes.

And, it’s also a shop so you can buy fresh bread, fruit and veg as well as packaged goods like tea and bulk foods too.

What a great addition to Rangiora.

The Organic Food House is open Monday to Friday 9am to 5.30pm and Saturday 10am to 2pm.
