DanceIf you’ve got a littlie who likes to dance and you think classes might work for them, then there are lots of options locally.  Here’s some I’ve spotted lately.

Pitter Patter – offer dance and movement classes for preschoolers right up to age 9. When I got in touch with instructor Emily she was keen to point out that the classes are different to many of the dance options in Christchurch for little ones as they allow them to go at their own pace. “It’s an extremely encouraging and nurturing environment for wee ones and parents are welcome to join in with their children if needed and are able to sit and watch if they prefer or of course can pop away for coffee and a break if they want to”, she said.

Classes for really littlies are kept smaller in number so that they are not overwhelmed and children are helped to not only pick up the technique, but also to have lots of fun with it.

Classes are held in Rangiora and Kaiapoi on Thursdays.  Prices start from $65 per term for Tiny Tots (2 year olds).  If you join part way through a term payments are simply worked out on a pro rata basis.  Check them out on Facebook for more details.

Irish Dancing – This is a bit different.  These classes are being run by Lynley who is a dancing teacher from the O’Neill School of Dance.  From the first class children will begin to learn the basics of traditional Irish dancing and practice to lively Irish music.  Lynley says there’s no need to spend on any special shoes or clothes – kids should just wear something loose and comfortable and flat-soled shoes.  Classes are suitable for age 4 upwards.  Classes start at Waikuku Beach Hall on Thursday 23rd July and you can attend any number of classes or get a discount to sign up for a term.  For more details contact Lynley via email lynleykb@yahoo.com.

Xtreme Rhythm Dance Classes – These are based around American jazz dance but also include a range of other types of dancing.  Kids do need to be signed up for the term but it is possible to try one lesson before committing.  Classes start for age 3 upwards and and there is  a mix of boys and girls but mostly girls.  Classes are in Rangiora on Wednesdays at 4.30pm and 5pm and Oxford on Mondays at 4.45pm and 5.15pm.
They are run by M Factor Events – so check out their website for more details.
Sarah Mead School of Ballet – This popular local teacher runs ballet and modern dance classes in Rangiora, Ohoka and Woodend.  With preschool ballet starting from age 2 upwards.  Check out her website for more details.
Dale Hartley School of Speech and Drama – This Rangiora based organisation also offers dance classes with quite a wide range of styles – everything from hip hop to jazz and tap.  More details on their website.
Dance Waimakariri – Offer ballet, contemporary and jazz classes and you can also opt for a pay as you go price or a full term fee.  Junior Dance Classes for example work out at $7.50 a class if you pay for the term or $10 per class if you go for the casual option.  They have classes on Wednesday in Rangiora and Fridays in Kaiapoi.  Further afield – they are in Amberley on Tuesdays and Balcairn on Thursdays.  More details here.
