20150911_153741Well it’s beginning to feel a lot like spring and after the slightly empty months of winter suddenly there are lots of things to do again.

If you fancy a wee drive then Cheviot are holding their Spring Festival on Saturday.  It kicks off at 9.45am when the area school open the festival with a Kapa Haka.  Then it’s ‘Food, flowers and fun’ according to their wee slogan and it sounds like a nice combo.  Expect stalls selling everything from venison salami to local wines and plants.  There’s family fun on offer in the school grounds for the littlies and a chance to do a historic/botanical tour of the local domain as well as hear a talk on the secrets of successful planting – so if you’re the gardening type this is one for you.  Check out the full programme here.

A bit closer to home on Sunday sees the Woodend School Fair.  It looks like they’re going all out with it – lots of great stuff promised including pony rides, bumper boats and an 82ft zip line or ‘flying fox’.  The fair runs from 10am to 2pm so if you’ve got kids it might be a fun way to spend a couple of hours.

Meanwhile in Dudley Park it’s the Obstacle and Cross Country race for littlies (2 to 8 year olds), being run by Rangiora High School Nursery.  As well as the races (for which kids need to register – check the details here but entries on the day are $15 it looks like).  There are also going to be stalls, face painting, bouncy castle, etc.  So lots of family fun..

Sunday also sees the re-opening of Wee Dram Farm Park which has been closed over the winter period.  A great chance for animal loving kids to get close up with all sorts of farmyard creatures.  Admission is $9 for further details visit their website.

For the more literary minded there’s a great event on in Amberley on Sunday.  The Hurunui Memorial Library are holding The Writers’ Tea Party where three writers including book and television reviewer Trevor Agnew and author Carl Nixon will be speaking.  Admission is $2 on the door and it kicks off at 2pm.

And finally, if cats are your thing then head along to the Kaiapoi Club in Raven Quay this Sunday.  It’s the All Breeds Cat Show and there will be cats of all fur-lengths, shapes and sizes.  10am to 4pm and gold coin donation on the door.

Have a great weekend!
